Dr. Hutton holds a Masters’ degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada as well as a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He holds an H-index of 73, an I10-index >230, and has published more than 300 peer reviewed articles. During his career he has worked in academia as a research scientist, as an HTA methodologist for the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (now the Canada Drug Agency), and as a technical writer, analyst and advisor for contract research organizations including Eversana Inc and Cornerstone Research Group. Dr. Hutton has been a Research Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research (OHRI) in Ottawa, Canada since 2013. He previously directed a large research program in knowledge synthesis for seven years that performed systematic reviews, meta-analyses, network meta-analyses, scoping reviews and rapid reviews for national and international clientele. He is also an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa, where he has instructed graduate courses in systematic reviews and health technology assessment since 2010. He holds expertise in knowledge synthesis and network meta-analysis (including leadership of development of the PRISMA 2015 NMA Extension Statement, now cited >5,500 times). He conducted comparative effectiveness reviews and related reviews within the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network in Canada for a decade. He also has expertise in real-world data including the use of administrative data, as well as the performance of indirect comparisons involving external control arms along with use of propensity score and MAIC methods. He has also played a prominent role in REaCT, Canada’s largest pragmatic trials program in oncology, since 2014 (www.react.ohri.ca).
Dr. Hutton has taught workshops at a range of conferences related to the design and conduct of network meta-analyses and indirect treatment comparisons including the Society for Medical Decision Making, the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health, and the Society for Clinical Trials.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Hutton previously served as a consultant and advisor for the Value and Evidence Division of Eversana Inc (previously Cornerstone Research Group) for several years. In this role, he provided methodologic, analytic and writing support to programs of indirect comparisons for a range of clientele and pharmaceuticals. This included development of key evidence materials related to conference proceedings, HTA submissions and peer reviewed publications.
Dr. Hutton resides in Ottawa, Canada with his wife, his twin sons and their highly excitable golden retriever, Rocket.
